Suicide Squad has been catapulted back into the discourse due to the sort-of-reboot, sort-of-reimagining The Suicide Squad, James Gunn’s take on the team of anti-heroes from the DC universe. The new film has been getting rave reviews, and even has some of the same actors reprise their roles. It is clear that the studio awarded Gunn many creative liberties denied to Ayer.
As calls for releasing the Ayer Cut became louder and louder on social media despite official statements making it clear that no such release will be made, Ayer released a letter to the fans on Twitter about the entire situation. The heartfelt post described how he put his entire life into the project, and that what the studio ended up releasing is “not his movie”.
— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 29, 2021 Ayer also revealed that while his cut exists as a radio song-free, properly edited and not overlong version with a proper story structure, it won’t ever see the light of day. In a spectacularly wholesome move, Ayer also expresses nothing but support and admiration for Gunn and his movie. Actor Jay Hernandez, who played El Diablo in Suicide Squad echoes Ayer’s statements and expressed support for the director. His message was underpinned by a dig at Warner Bros for their edit of the movie featuring El Diablo sacrificing himself by sarcastically stating “Yeah, I get it. There’s obviously way too many Latino superheroes in these tent pole movies”. It’s worth noting that El Diablo survives in Ayer’s version.
