Squid Game ousted Bridgerton as the biggest launch on Netflix last year, which suggests that it was only a matter of time before the extremely cost-effective series got greenlit for a sequel. For a while, fans believed that Season 2 was already in the works, but it was a mistranslation. As it turns out, Squid Game hadn’t been renewed for a second season yet. However, this time around, things are very official. According to Variety, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that “The Squid Game universe has just begun” during the streaming platform’s fourth-quarter 2021 interview. The confirmation is certainly good news for Squid Game fans. Dong-hyuk mentioned last year that he already has a framework for Season 2. More time has only eclipsed since, suggesting that Dong-hyuk must have only come up with even more interesting ideas that are sure to keep subscribers on the hook for the long haul. Squid Game spent several weeks at the top of Netflix’s charts before finally dropping down a peg or two and eventually bowing out. As the most successful series to launch on Netflix, the onus is on Dong-hyuk to come up with a follow-up season that can match the hype and expectations. But, after already doing it once, there’s no reason why Dong-hyuk wouldn’t be able to do it again. Here’s to hoping that Netflix doesn’t rush Dong-hyuk into working on Season 2 and beyond of Squid Game. In other Netflix news, the popular streaming platform just raised its subscription prices across the board in the United States. Then again, with shows like the aforementioned Squid Game follow-up season as well as the back-to-back Red Notice sequels, we’re sure that subscribers are going to get their money’s worth - and then some.
